Bucephalandra is a slow-growing rhizome plant from Borneo, grown for leaves that shimmer blue and purple under good light. It attaches to hardscape rather than rooting in substrate, tolerates low to medium light, and is easy to keep once past the melt that almost every new plant goes through.
Varieties and naming
Plants are sold as Bucephalandra sp. followed by a trade name, because the genus contains a great many forms and the naming in the hobby is not settled. Buy by appearance and by the seller’s variety name rather than expecting a stable binomial.
Expect it to melt
Melt on first transition is normal for Bucephalandra. Leaves die back after the plant moves into your tank, and new growth follows once it adapts to the conditions. It is not a sign you have done something wrong.
The mistake is reacting to it. People pull the plant out, move it, or throw it away during the very phase it needs to be left alone. Leave the rhizome attached, keep conditions steady, and wait. This is the same behaviour Cryptocoryne wendtii shows, and there is more on it in the plant melt guide.

Attach it to rock or wood and keep the rhizome above the surface, exactly as with Anubias and Java fern. Added CO2 is not required but does help, and stronger light brings out the colour the plant is bought for.

Why is my Bucephalandra melting?
Melt on the first transition into a new tank is normal for this plant. Leave it attached and keep conditions stable, and it will push new leaves adapted to your water.
Does Bucephalandra need CO2?
Not required, but beneficial. It will grow without it, just slowly. Added CO2 and better light are what produce the strong colouring.
Bucephalandra or Anubias?
Both are slow epiphytes with the same rhizome rule. Anubias is the tougher of the two and does better in genuinely low light. Bucephalandra offers smaller leaves and far more colour, at the cost of a melt phase when it arrives.
